Biography | Born: April 30, 1946 - Swansea, Wales, UK The English tenor, Wynford Evans, studied at the Dyfatty Infants School (1950-1954), the Terrace Road Junior School (1954-1957), the Dynevor Grammar School for Boys (1957-1963), and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London (1963-1967), where he graduated and won the Gold Medal for Singers in the same year. During his career, he has studied singing with Joyce Newton, Marian Nowakowski, Robert Bowman, Richard Lewis and Gustave Sacher.
Wynford Evans has become one of Britain's leading tenors. He has appeared with all the major choirs and orchestras in the UK as well as appearing in major Festivals worldwide. His wide-ranging repertoire includes includes literally hundreds of oratorio, concerts and recitals, among them all the major tenor roles in oratorio from the most popular to rarely performed works such as Finzi's Intimations of Immortality and also many other works by 20th Century British composers.
Opera appearances include roles with Netherlands Opera, Welsh National Opera (WNO), Kent Opera, Opera de Lyon, Handel Opera, etc. London Early Music Group, USC Early Music Group (LA), Fortunes Fire. Wynford Evans has appeared many times at the Royal Albert Hall in Promenade Concerts (over thirty appearances at the Proms and in one season performed in both opening and closing concerts) and has taken part in concerts there with massed Male Voice Choirs. At Cardiff Arms Park, he sang in front of a choir of 10,000 voices to an audience of 35,000! In 2006 he toured with his popular 'The Musical World of Wynford Evans' - an evening's entertainment of arias from opera, oratorio, Gilbert and Sullivan, musicals, and well-known ballads.
Wynford Evans has sung as a soloist with many fine international conductors. These include John Barbirolli, Groves, John Eliot Gardiner, Pritchard, Roger Norrington, Glover, Richard Bonynge, Arwel Hughes, Elder, Colin Davis and Simon Rattle. He has also sung with the following ensembles, among others: Purcell Consort, Pro Cantione Antiqua, Baccholian Singers and Linden Singers.
Between 1994 and 2001, Wynford Evans conducted The Egham and District Choral Society, performing such works as Antonio Vivaldi's Gloria, Orff's Carmina Burana, George Frideric Handel's Messiah, L.v. Beethoven's Mass in C, Felix Mendelssohn's Elijah, Mozart's Requiem, Haydn's Nelson Mass, L.v. Beethoven's Choral Fantasia, and many miscellaneous concerts.
Wynford Evans has always combined a very successful singing career with a certain amount of private singing teaching, with students of all ages. His involvement with Royal Holloway and Bedford New College - University of London, began in 1989. Since 1980 he has given many master-classes in various countries - UK (Charterhouse etc), Italy, Finland, Poland, Germany, France, Australia, USA. He was invited to Seoul, South Korea, to teach a prestigious acting group of 27 to sing in a play with music.
Wynford Evans has adjudicated at many world festivals, including the Royal National Eisteddfod of Wales and the International Singing Competition in Pretoria, South Africa. He has also been involved with adjudicating various prestigious singing prizes at the major London Music Colleges and at the Royal Welsh College of Music in Cardiff where he has been asked to return in 2007. he was also involved in adjudicating at the Hounslow Festival of Music, Speech and Dance in 2006. |
