Biography | Paul was an English teacher at Eton College before he turned to singing and took a postgraduate course on a scholarship at the GSMD. After leaving college he joined Glyndebourne, where he sang in the chorus, covered a variety of principal roles, and performed in studio productions of works by Mussorgsky, Rachmaninov and Jonathan Dove. His career was unfortunately interrupted by a lengthy convalescence due to a serious leg injury following a road accident. However, once fully recovered, he understudied the role of 1st Armed man, requiring him to perform on stilts on a raked stage. He has since left the Glyndebourne chorus to try new opportunities, and has been busy at the ENO covering the title role in their acclaimed production of Berliozs Damnation of Faust, and Hoffmann in their recent new production of Offenbachs Tales of Hoffmann. He has just finished singing his first principal role at ENO - Gastone in La Traviata. Other highlights of his freelance career so far have varied from performing the role of the lowlife Jemmy Twitcher in Britten/Gay's Beggar's Opera at the Royal Opera to the role of the all-powerful Aurelios, 'Master of the Universe' in the eponymous experimental sci-fi opera at the BAC. More familiar roles have included Tito from Mozart's Clemenza di Tito, and Count Almaviva from Rossini's Barber of Seville. Whilst still at college he performed Messiah at the RAH with the RPO, and his oratorio work has since seen him perform works including Verdis Requiem and Elgars Dream of Gerontius in venues throughout the country including Londons Barbican centre. Pauls solo recordings include a live charity performance of Mozarts Requiem on the Hyperion label. Paul is taught by David Pollard. |
