BiographySir George Cox has served as Chairman, Chief Executive and Senior Independent Director of various companies. He is currently a Board Member of NYSE-Euronext (the group comprising the New York Stock Exchange, the Paris, Amsterdam, Bruxelles and Lisbon Stock Exchanges, and the London Financial Futures and Options Exchange) and he is also a Director of Shorts, the aerospace company.

He is the Pro-Chancellor and Chair of Council of Warwick University and for several years chaired the University's Business School. Cox carrie dout an independent review for HM Opposition of Short-termism in British Business.

Originally qualifying as an aeronautical engineering, he worked in the aerospace and precision engineering industries before entering management consultancy. In 1977, along with others, he formed Butler Cox plc, the consulting and research group, which was subsequently floated on the main market of the London Stock Exchange and eventually sold to Computer Sciences Corporation.

From 1999 to 2004 he was Director General of the Institute of Directors, and later served as Chairman of the Design Council, during which time he carried out the Cox Review (of creativity in business) for the UK government.

He was knighted for services to business in 2006.

He is the President of the Institution of Engineering Designers and President of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists. He was Chair of Merlin (the international emergency medical aid charity) from 2000 to 2006, and now chairs Merlin USA.

He holds an Honorary Fellowship from Queen Mary University of London, and Honorary Doctorates from the Universities of Cranfield, Wolverhampton, Middlesex, Huddersfield, De Montfort and Northumbria.

Sir George rowed for the University of London, and later served as the University's Chief Coach. He coached GB crews at two World Championships, and also coached Oxford Boat Race crews. He served as Chairman of Selectors for GB rowing for the 1979 World Championships and 1980 Olympics, and is currently President of Leander, the world's oldest and most successful rowing club.
