Biography | Christopher Newport was born in Lincoln and began playing the horn at the age of 13. Five years later he entered the Royal Academy of Music as a student of James Brown, graduating with hon ours in 1981. He now has a flourishing freelance career working with many of this country's leading orchestras and chamber groups as well as visiting foreign orchestras. Christopher Newport has been Principal Horn of the London Mozart Players since 1985. Concerto engagements are playing an ever increasing role in his career. His playing of the solo horn part in Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante at the London Mozart Players' 40th anniversary concert was greeted as 'readily matching the virtuosity of Dennis Brain'. He drew special mention for his 'immaculate display' in the horn obbligato of the aria Luigi da te at a BBC Promenade concert, in which he also accompanies Felicity Lott in the London Mozart Player's recording of the same work. Concerto appearances include Britten's Serenade for Tenor Horn and Strings with Maldwyn Davies and Robert Tear in Fishguard and Bolton as well as Mozart and Strauss concertos in Warwick, Bolton, Oxford, Portsmouth, Swansea, St. Albans, Kingston and the London Barbican. Christopher is a regular member of the London Mozart Players Chamber Ensemble, with whom he has given concerts throughout the UK, as well as appearing in Spain. |
