The Colombian tenor, Alejandro Ramirez, graduated from the University of Bogotá with a doctor´s degree in medicine. At the same time he studied music and voice at the Conservatoire of Bogotá in Colombia and later at the Musikhochschule Freiburg in Germany, continuing his vocal studies with Anneliese Kupper in München and Günter Reich in Stuttgart.

Alejandro Ramírez has been a member of the Opera companies at Mannheim and Frankfurt and now regularly appears as a guest at all the major European Opera-houses, among others: Wiener Staatsoper, Bayerische Staatsoper München, Deutsche Oper and Staatsoper Berlin, Hamburgische Staatsoper, Bonn, Köln, Düsseldorf and Zürich. He made his Covent Garden début in 1984 as Nemorino in L'Elisir d'amore, returning there for Ernesto in Don Pasquale and Fenton in Falstaff. The following year he appeared for the first time at the Vienna State Opera as Alfredo in Traviata, at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich as Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni and as Adolar in Euryanthe, and in 1986 at the Salzburg Festival as Telemaco in Ritorno d'Ulisse in Patria. 1988 he performed with the Bavarian State Opera at La Scala de Milano, singing Leukippos in Daphne and Henry Morosus in Die Schweigsame Frau by Richard Strauss, under the direction of Wolfgang Sawallisch. Concert-appearances in London took place at the Royal Albert Hall (Proms 1988) and at the Barbican Centre with the London Symphony Orchestra under Sir Colin Davis. 1995 he sang at the Semperopera in Dresden as Tito in La Clemenza di Tito, at Düsseldorf as Rodolfo in La Bohème and Duca in Rigoletto, and at Karlsruhe as Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana and as Don Carlo in Don Carlo.
Since October 1990 Alejandro Ramírez has been Professor of singing at the Musikhochschule of Mannheim in Germany.
