BiographyBritish soprano Lucy Knight (née Roberts), winner of the International Opera Awards Foundation and the Making Music Award for Young Concert Artists, is fast establishing herself as one of the exciting artists of her generation. She was first drawn to classical music by the English composer Henry Purcell, and in 2016 will launch a concert tour in celebration of his music through the diaries of Samuel Pepys, in collaboration with Poet in the City. A specialist in the Baroque repertoire, Lucy most recently reprised the role of Ninfa in Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo at the Bayerisches Staatsoper (Chris Moulds), after her début in 2014 for Ivor Bolton.
Lucy was praised in Opera Magazine for her “exquisite singing and acting” in the role of Yniold in Aylin Bozok’s production of Pelléas (Arcola Theatre), where other roles have included Sophie Werther (“Lucy Knight sang prettily as Sophie” – Rupert Christiansen, The Telegraph, 2014). She has performed the roles of Bridesmaid Freischütz at the Opéra Comique, Paris and the BBC Proms for Sir John Eliot Gardiner; Venus Venus & Adonis; Tytania A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Aldeburgh; and Ensemble Orphée at the Royal Opera House. In 2016 she will make her début at Longborough Festival Opera as Barbarina Le nozze di Figaro.
Lucy was privileged to be chosen as the soprano soloist for the world première of Karl Jenkins’ The Healer in Grayshott and live on Classic FM, and in 2015 she made her Carnegie Hall/New York début with the work. As a concert artist, highlights include the UK première of Sibelius’s Kuolema in King’s Place (English Chamber Orchestra), Baroque arias in the OAE’s Queens, Heroines & Ladykillers (Purcell Room), and Wolf’s Italienisches Liederbuch at LSO St Luke’s under the direction of Graham Johnson. Forthcoming engagements include her solo débuts at the Royal Festival Hall, Manchester Bridgewater Hall and Birmingham Symphony Hall with Karl Jenkins/Raymond Gubbay, and a recital in the London Song Festival about her favourite city in Europe – Paris!
Lucy is grateful for the support she has received for her studies at Cambridge University, The Guildhall School of Music & Drama, the Monteverdi Choir Apprenticeship Scheme, Franz-Schubert-Institute in Vienna, and English National Opera. (November 2015)
