Biography | Before turning professional, Pernfors was particularly successful in the United States as a collegiate player for the University of Georgia. It was here that he became the first player since Dennis Ralston to win back-to-back NCAA singles titles in 1984 and 1985. In his first year as a professional in 1986 Pernfors reached his first and only Grand Slam singles final at the French Open where he lost in straight sets to Ivan Llendl. Pernfors career was hindered by injuries in the early 1990s, however he managed to make a remarkable comeback in 1993, winning the Tennis Masters series event in Canada an achievement that earnt him the prestigious ATPs Comeback Player of the Year award. Since retiring Pernfors is a regular competitor on the ATP Champions Tour and has established a company which sells baseball caps with fellow Champions Tour player Mats Wilander. |
