NameCooper; Gary 'Catweazle' (fl 1970s-d 1993); English wrestler
Datesfl 1970s-d 1993
GenderMale
BiographyThe golden age of British Wrestling saw Catweazle, a huge wild bearded wrestler, remove his sackcloth to fight in some brightly coloured outfit against the best in the UK.
In the age of Giant Haystacks he was a popular bear of a man with his wild long hair a vague resemblance to the TV character he was named after.
He was a surreal character which is why the public loved him so much, he used to place a lucky toad in his corner of the ring and then lick it and begin tripping out on his opponent!
The gentle giant died in 1993 after a 22 year career and his subsequent cremation led to the inauguration of the annual British Wrestlers Reunion.
It was a tribute to the man that he was selected by Dale Martin Promotions to oppose Mick McManus in his final televised bout.
Real name Gary Cooper, he was born in, and lived in Hexthorpe, Doncaster.
