It is no mean achievement for a singer to create, in a crowded Albert Hall, the warmth and intimacy of a private party. But Leonard Cohen, the Canadian poet, song-writer and singer, accomplished this so successfully at the weekend that his large audience, even after half a dozen encores, was still reluctant to leave.
His elliptical phrasing and at times almost Biblical imagery have no counterpart among othe rpop, folk or rock singers; the invantatory quality of his voice is inseperable from the songs.
