Performance Notes | A "...banquet was laid on at the Royal Albert Hall last night where the line-up of bands read almost like a Who's Who of British jazz. In a Carnival of Jazz extending over eight and a half hours no less than eight of the country's leading groups took part. For the 3,000 people present dancing was a secondary consideration. With such performers as Humphrey Lyttleton, Chris Barber, Ken Colyer and Mick Mulligan on the platform many were content to be simply listeners. If this marathon carnival proved anything it was that there is no shortage of good jazz in the country. British musicians have retained the spirit and tradition of the music but have benefited from improved technical accomplishment in their interpretation. Standards are now higher than they have ever been amongst the country's jazz musicians. Appreciation, too, has improved and last night's audience showed intelligent understanding of the music which deservedly earned applause." (The Daily Telegraph, 19 January 1958) |
