Performance Notes"After an interval a lighter side of Dame Ethel Smyth's art was presented. The overture to The Boatswain's Mate' was followed by a ballet suite for orchestra put together from the little one-act opera 'Fete Galante', a tuneful and taking piece. Finally Dame Ethel, in her Doctor's Robes (Durham) and with a baton presented to her by her suffragist friend, conducted 'The March of the Women' (in which the male members of the choir were magnanimously allowed to join) and the festival was rounded off with the usual compliments and the presentation of a laurel wreath."
(The Times, 4 March 1934)

The costs of the concert had been subscribed by the composer's friends and admirers to celebrate her seventy-fifth birthday. Dame Ethel was sat in the Royal Box with the Queen. (The Daily Telegraph, 5 March 1934)
