Performance NotesAn anti-Nazi demonstration opposing the rise of Fascism in Germany.
A resolution was carried condemning " the policy of repression and cruelty pursued since the accession to power of Hitler's Government in Germany" and declaring such a policy to be " a serious menace to political and civil liberty and good understanding between nations." The resolution also protested against the arbitary arrest, ill-treatment, torture or murder of political opponents of the Hitler Government" and condemned "the systematic and brutal persecution of the Jewish people". (The Times)
"Nearly 10,000 people packed the Albert Hall, London last night, Unanimously passed a resolution protesting against persecution by Naziz' in Germany of Jews, Socialists and Communists." "Mr George Lansbury would up the speeches with a stirring appeal for a true civilisaation, based, not on hatred and brute force, but on international co-operation and respect. We have met to join in the world-wide protest which is surging up from all lands against the outrages and crimes committee by Governments organised and controlled by fascists. He said the Self appointed dictators ruling in Europe are the outward visible sign of decadence and barbarism. Civilisation cannot exist where freedom and liberty of thought and speech are suppressed."
