Performance Notes | "INCENSE AT THE ALBERT HALL. ALTAR CANDLES AND CRUCIFIX. ...The famous rotunda, the scene of so many concerts, boxing matches, and spectacles, presented a surprising appearance. The platform had been converted into a great sanctuary, from which rose a broad flight of steps to an altar. A dorsal of green and gold behing the altar, and six immensely tall candlesticks flanking a bronze crucifix, almost completely obscured the organ. The splendid cope of the officiant, the surpliced choir and acolytes, and the aromatic perfume of the incense, with which the altar was censed at he Magnificat, all helped pwerfully to assist the illusion that one was in a church. There was a congregation numbering several thousands, and the reverent demeanour throughout was very moving." (The DailyTelegraph, 11 July 1933) |
