Georgia Mann presents a free informal late-night music and poetry event featuring emerging UK talent. Tonight, hear music from 42 Strings with poetry from Avaes Mohammad.
Poet, writer and performer Avaes Mohammad engages with themes of science, spirituality and political sociology. His musical influences span everything from the Sufi saints of South Asia to the dub poets of Jamaica; inspirations that have left a permanent hue from which he experiences the sacred and profane alike.
42 Strings is a collaboration between zheng player Muqi Li and korist Althea SullyCole, who are currently based in London. The pair met at the School of Oriental and African Studies in 2015. Their performances consist primarily of original compositions, with the occasional incorporation of a traditional West African or Chinese tune. The pair hope to spread a greater appreciation for instruments rarely found on western stages and to start conversations about cultural exchange, authenticity and ownership with their music. |
