Set List | 'Hamlet', Liszt, 'The Imaginary Museum', J Anderson INTERVAL 'From Cradle to the Grave', Liszt, 'Pictures at an Exhibition', Mussorgsky, orch. Ravel |
Performance Notes | In his 13 symphonic poems Liszt transformed the concert overture into something urgently new.
The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and its Principal Guest Conductor Ilan Volkov here perform two of the last in the series the mercurial Hamlet, a study of Shakespeares tragic hero, and From the Cradle to the Grave, one of Liszts most experimental works.
They sit alongside Mussorgskys much-loved Pictures at an Exhibition and the world premiere of a new piano concerto by Julian Anderson, which offers a tour around an imaginary museum of contrasting worlds and sensations.
BBC co-commission with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and world premiere of 'The Imaginary Museum', Julien Anderson. |
