Performance Notes"The performance of St Paul given last night at the Albert hall was quite up to the high average attained under Sir Joseph Barnby. The many fine choral numbers were sung with the usual precision and effect, though more than one of them was taken a good deal more deliberately than usual. This peculiarity was especially prominent in "Happy blest are they," the flowing character of which was thus a good deal lost. Such justly popular numbers as "Sleepers Awake" and "O Great is the depth" were very finely sung. The soprano solos were sung with much skill by Madame Clara Samuell, whose voice, however is scaresly powerful enough for the trying work of singing music of this calibre in so large a building. In consequence, the air "Jerusalem" was a little wanting in effect, in spite of the artistic manner in which it was sung. Mme Belle Cole, Mr Ben Davies and Mr Watkin Mills sang the other parts in a manner which calls for nothing but praise, and the parts of the false witnesses were taken by Messrs John Woodley and Mr F Stuart Hyatt with success.
