Performance Notes | This was a free concert for the new Auxeto Gramophone Company and the first gramophone concert at the Royal Albert Hall.
"An extraordinary effect was produced at the Albert Hall last night at the gramophone concert when the new Auxeto-gramophone was exhibited or heard, whichever is the right word. Extraordinary because Mme.Patti singing 'Pur dicesti' when she was not there, or any other of the distinguished soloists turned on after the other, did create something difficult otherwise to describe. Whether the invention, which seems to increase the tone of the ordinary gramphone to a marked degree, is of any other value those who really like the machine must decide. To musical people such sounds are but a travesty of the real thing. The hall was very full, and it must be added that there were solists present in flesh and blood as well as only on wax - namely, Miss Amy Castles and Mr John Harrsion, who sang, Mr WH Squire and Mr Eli Hudson, who played the violoncello and piccolo respectively, with Mr H L Balfour at the organ. The songs and pieces performed by these artists were then reproduced on the gramophone." (The Times, 15 December 1906) |
