Performance Notes | The Times (24 May 1909) noted that, 'The most conspicuous feature of the scheme of decoration was the flying from the pillars of the gallery, where over 400 boys from the Duke of York's School were seated, of the 60 beautiful and costly Union Jacks which represent Canada's contribution to the scheme, and for which over £150 was paid. The three tiers below were effectively draped in red, white, and blue, and at intervals trophy shields were arranged. Over the King's box there was a floral crown, and floral ostrich feathers were displayed over the Prince of Wale's box. The red coats of officers and soldiers who formed part of the audience and those of the bandsmen from Kneller Hall, who sat in the auditorium, lent a further touch of colour.'
Other guests at the event were the Earl and Countess Grey, the Earl and Countess of Minto, the Duke of Devonshire, the Duke of Wellington, Earl Roberts, Sir Wilfrid Laurier, and the Right Hon. A J Balfour. |
