Performance NotesFor over 20 years Martin Speake has led various projects exploring his interest in Indian, Arabic and Turkish music and blending it with his jazz sensibilities.

Charukesi features Alyson Cawley on tenor saxophone, Mike De Souza on guitar and Adam Merrell on drums and percussion alongside the leader’s alto saxophone and compositions.

The groove-based and trance like music reflects Martin’s interest in improvising with rhythm and melody rather than harmony.

The melodic framework of ragas taken from Indian tradition and rhythmic cycles from the Arabic and Turkish musical world is combined to make an original sound, featuring four generations of players bringing their own unique interpretations to the whole.
