Performance NotesVirtuoso tabla player Aref Durvesh along with beatboxer and sound artist Jason Singh present their new project exploring and celebrating the world of rhythm through acoustic instruments, voice, live sampling and electronics. Together with guest artists, will explore a wide vista of music and sound worlds including ambient drones, jazz, free improvisation, dub, afro cuban, Indian classical, jungle, broken beat and the spaces in-between.

Aref Durvesh is a celebrated and prolific tabla artist who has recorded and performed with an array of artists. He is also one of the longest-serving members of the Nitin Sawhney band, having performed on all of his albums as well as all his UK and international tours. Aref trained under his father, Abdul Kadir Durvesh, a world-renowned shehnai player and was also a disciple of the legendary Ustad Bismillah Khan. Aref has taken traditional tabla into new dimensions by integrating it into contemporary, urban, western classical and jazz genres with his unique style and creativity.

Jason Singh is a sound artist, beatboxer, producer, DJ, facilitator and performer. His work is an ongoing exploration of the natural word, voice and music technology. Singh is referred to as “the human sampler” by Cerys Matthews (Radio 6) and his work has been called “beautiful, strange, calming music” by nature writer Robert Macfarlane.
