Performance Notes | This season we celebrate the careers of 20th-century game-changers Pierre Boulez and Luciano Berio, whose inventive, iconoclastic legacies continue to echo through the sounds, styles and techniques of today.
The Ensemble intercontemporain founded by Boulez in 1976 and Pierre Bleuse celebrate the pair in a concert full of sonic theatre. Boulezs tour de force for clarinet, the shadow-duet Dialogue de lombre double, meets Berios allusive, tragicomic music-drama Recital I, which remixes operas history via the composers own distinctive imagination.
Tragicomedy also streaks through Berios Sequenza V, which prompts a solo trombonist to explore a plethora of unlikely playing (and vocal) techniques. |
