Performance NotesGounod's Faust was enacted in 'costume', to the displeasure of the Times critic:-
'The propriety of great singers exhibiting themselves in their stage costumes on a concert platform, albeit adorned with shrubs and flowers, seems more than doubtful from an artistic point of view, and it must be hoped that the experiments, suggested it is said by American precedent, will not be repeated'. (The Times, 8 May 1882).
