DescriptionTo the left, men and women work in a garden, planting and watering flowers, pruning fruit trees and gathering the ripened fruit; the vines are tended and grapes gathered. To the right of this scene, surveyors measure the land and boundary marks and an architect inspects the plans of a tower held up before him by an assistant. Finally, on the far right, a Roman General is presented with the map of a conquered country, whilst soldiers bring before him captives from that same country.

Henry Stacy Marks RA (13 September 1829 in London - 9 January 1898 in London) was an English artist who took a particular interest in Shakespearean and medieval themes in his early career and later in decorative art depicting birds and ornithologists apart from landscapes. Most of his early works were oils but he also worked on murals and with watercolours. He was a founding member of the St Johns Wood Clique and was well known for his humorous performances.
