DescriptionFrom the left, a Harpist represents early music, when often musicians would wander from castle to castle, entertaining and receiving payment and sometimes food and lodging in return for their music. To the right of him, a lady, a baron and a knight listen attentively. To their right, a bridal procession is led by musicians, making their way to the wedding celebrations. To the right of the bridal procession, a courting couple use music to celebrate their love.

Frederick Richard Pickersgill RA (25 September 1820 - 20 December 1900) was an English painter and book illustrator. Born in London into a family of artists, he was admitted to the Royal Academy Schools in 1840 and exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1839-1875. Most of these works depicted scenes drawn from literature, religion, and history. Pickersgill was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1847 and a full Royal Academician in June 1857, but retired in 1888. He was keeper of the Royal Academy Schools from 1873 to 1887.
