| Performance Notes | Review of the event taken from The Times, 27 December 1918:
"Mr [William Morris] Hughes, the Prime Minister of Australia, was present at an entertainment at the Royal Albert Hall yesterday, given to members of the Australian naval and military forces, by the High Commissioner of Australia, the General Officer Commanding the Australian Imperial Force, the Minister of the Royal Australian Navy, the Australian War Comforts Fund, and the Australian Red Cross Society. Mr Arthur Mason (late organist, Sydney Town Hall) was at the organ, and the performers included the Nevada Quartette (from the United States warship Nevada).
A 'tug-of-war' took place in the area for a cup presented by Mr Lionel Robinson. Teams representing the Australian Army, the New Zealand Army, and the Canadian Army entered the competition, but the British Army team was unable to be present. In the first bout the Australian team knocked out the New Zealand team, and later successfully disposed of the Canadian team by eight points to nil. The cup was presented to the winning team by Mr Hughes. A pushball match between Australia and New Zealand was won by the later team.
At the close of the entertainment Mr Hughes, who was accompanied by Mr Andrew Fisher (High Commissioner) and General Birdwood (commanding the Australian and New Zealand Forces), moved a vote of thanks to the entertainers, to Mr Oswald Stoll, for his cooperation , and to Captain H. C. Smart, who had organised it." |
