Exposure to Indian films and dancing has made Indian music acceptable here, if not always easily digestible. A group of leading Indian musicians at the Albert Hall yesterday made clear that compared with the European style the difference was simply one of degree and not of kind.
Almost without exception the songs in this Festival of Light and Folk Music of India were love-lyrics. Forlorn maidens, abandoned wives, poetical fishermen - all sang of their longing for or loss of a beloved. The prime fascination was the presentation style.
No singer merely performed with an accompanist, but each item was an artfully balanced ensemble with voice, drums, flute and dilruba (a violin type) blended in a kind of miniature concerto, These numbers covered a big melodic range artfully illuminated by the intricate rhythmic variations provided by the instruments."
