Performance NotesThis was the first time in the 13 year history of the awards that two designers had been joint winners of Britain's top fashion award. The award presented to Alexander McQueen and John Galliano was one of 11 awards presented at a ceremony wuth an audience of 3,000 guests. Naomi Campbell received Galliano's awrd on his behalf.

Bruce Oldfield announced that the British Fashion Council would set up a scholarship and charitable trust in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales - the inspiration of many designers, and the greatest ever ambassador for British fashion.

A mix up at the ceremony happened when Clements Ribeiro were called to the stage and were given the New Generation award, but 48 hours later it emerged that the real winner was Antonio Berardi.

The ceremony was broadcast on Channel 5 on 23 October 1997.
