Performance NotesThis was the first ever Smash Hits Poll Winners Party. Each award winner was voted by readers of the Smash Hits magazine. The event was broadcast live on BBC1 at 15:30 and directed by Phil Chilvers.

The event has an 'underwater theme. The Choir Stalls were covered by a giant inflatible octopus and the stage featured a giant Neptune, fallen column, rainbow, castles and balloon bubbles. The event ended with a balloon drop from the ceiling.

Michael Jackson gave pre-recorded acceptance speech for his Best Male Artist award.

Sinitta attended with her then boyfriend, Brad Pitt.
