Performance Notes"The Mass came off at the Albert Hall on 31 Jan. Result, part of it is to be done at the Gloucester Festival next September, and all of it by the Sheffield Musical Union in November. Malcolm Sargent conducted at the Albert Hall. He will be a fine conductor some day. He began by being more cheeky to me than words can say. And I had met him only once and been specially nice to him! The old tradition started by Beecham:' Show E.S. I won't stand any nonsense!' But M S ended up by being my thrall and couldn't believe I was the person he had 'heard about'. Well! Well!" (Extract taken from Ethel Smyth's diary in Ethel Smyth - A Biography, by Christopher St John, 1959)
