Performance NotesMahalia Jackson's diary entry for 7 April 1961;
"Got to Albert Hall, on Kensington Road, at 5 this evening. It looks like it was built before Jesus came - it has that old reverent look about it. We went inside and the first thing I inquired about was the mike, for I thought the acoustics were worse than they actually were. We got the sound system straightened out and the men were very kind to me there. The head man recognises me from 1952 when I was awfully sick and weighed only 140 pounds. Now I'm 240 pounds - but he thinks I look well. The manager, Mr Christopher Hopper, also remembered me from the last visit.
There was a warm and pleasant atmosphere and it was memorable and sad, too. It was like coming back from the dead, a chance to sing in London again, the greatest city in the greatest Kingdom.
Finally, I went back to the dressing room and Dave came in and told me they were lining up in the streets getting tickets, that the house was filling up and that Princess Alexandria, daughter of the Duchess of Kent, was there. I began to cry and thank God because my mind went back almost nine years and I remembered what a sick woman I was then.
Admist all the joy and thanking God I got a most discourteous letter from a critic. Mildred thought it would upset me but nothing could upset me because I had prayed and the Lord had heard my prayers.
I started my program with my regular song, My Home Over There. I always like to sing that because it reminds me of Paul when he said "I've fought a good fight and I kept my faith." The song goes: "When my work is done, set the setting sun, I'm going to my home over there. I shall walk the golden stairs and be free from every care when I reach my home over there." That's why it reminds me of Paul. I believe that one day I shall do that.
The first time I was at the Albert Hall it was cold as ice but there was a great difference in the English people this time because there was a great difference in me. I couldn't say who was there, how many saints or sinners, because there was one happy medium. They carried on so loud that they called the police to get me through the crowd. When I got back to my hotel, I opened my Bible and read and got on my knees and thanksed God for his blessing. My body was so exhausted that I didn't make it a long prayer, but I made it sincere."
