Biography | Pamela Bowden (17 April 1925, Rochdale, Lancashire, England - 8 April 2003) was a British mezzo-soprano.
Following the untimely death of Kathleen Ferrier in 1953, Bowden was designated one of her successors among British mezzo-sopranos. If she never quite lived up to that impossible title, she made a mark in her own right as a singer of undoubted discernment, with a mellow timbre and an attractive personality. Although she appeared occasionally in opera, the main thrust of her career was in recital and oratorio. Her excellent technique and simplicity of style served her well in all the more famous choral works, performed more often in the 1950s and 60s than they are today. |
