Biography | All the members of this fine brass group - which was founded in 1974 - are highly-reputed section principals drawn from the major British orchestras. Their large repertoire encompasses the glories of the high Renaissance to the best of the present day, and their strength can be varied from the standard quintet up to levels commensurate with the splendour of the Basilica of St. Mark in Venice in the era of the Gabrielis.
The English Brass Ensemble like to perform with high quality choirs and have appeared on several occasions in conjunction with The Choir of St. Paul's Cathedral, London, under the direction of their Organist and Director of Music, John Scott (including a tour of Spain). The English Brass Ensemble has commissioned new music from some of the foremost present-day composers, and has an admirable reputation for both excellence and innovation.
The English Brass Ensemble has worked in close association with The British Council, under the aegis of which tours have been undertaken to Greece, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, Ethiopia, Qatar, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. The ensemble also performed in Turkey for the first time in 1992, giving concerts in Ankara and Istanbul.
