NameOrfeón Pamplonés; 1865-; Spanish choir
Dates1865-
BiographyThe Orfeón Pamplonés, founded in 1865 in the city of Pamplona, Spain, is one of Europe’s most experienced and prestigious choral institutions.
This choral society was the first in Spain to incorporate women, with the establishment in 1903 of a female choir, with which it performed at the wedding of King Alfonso XIII.
From then on, it embarked on an artistic career unusual at that time and age, performing pieces never shown before in Spain, such as Beethoven's “Missa Solemnis” or J.S. Bach’s “Mass in B minor”.
Today, the Orfeón Pamplonés is a very special institution: a big amateur group composed by 120 voices, performing with the most important international symphonic orchestras.
The Orfeón Pamplonés is the first Spanish choir to play in the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall, performing Malher`s Second and Eighth Symphonies with the Saint Petersburg Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra in 2010, conducted by Valéry Gergiev.
In 2012, the Orfeón Pamplonés performs “Carmina Burana” and selections from Manuel de Falla´s “Atlantida” at the Lincoln Center with the New York Philharmonic and Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, with a very enthusiastic musical review coming from the New York Times.
In 2009, the Orfeón premiered the show “Carmina Burana”, by Carl Orff, together with the iconoclastic Barcelona theatre company La Fura dels Baus, a project programmed for the next five years during which it is touring the main domestic and international auditoriums in a very successful tour.
The Orfeón starts the 2013-2014 season at the National Auditorium with the Philharmonia Orchestra and Esa-Pekka Salonen. In September, the choir performs Mahler´s “2nd Symphonie” with the Orchestre National de Bordeaux, and in December they will be in Toulouse to perform Ravel´s “Dafnis et Cloé” with the Toulouse Capitol Orchestre.
In addition, the Society will stage other works during this season, such as Mozart and Verdi´s Requiems conducted by Antoni Wit, with the Navarra Symphonic Orchestra. In July 2014, the Orfeón will participate in the festival Choregies de Orange, in France, performing Orff´s “Carmina Burana (July 2015)
