BiographyBefore turning professional, Pernfors was particularly successful in the United States as a collegiate player for the University of Georgia. It was here that he became the first player since Dennis Ralston to win back-to-back NCAA singles titles in 1984 and 1985. In his first year as a professional in 1986 Pernfors reached his first and only Grand Slam singles final at the French Open – where he lost in straight sets to Ivan Llendl.
Pernfors career was hindered by injuries in the early 1990s, however he managed to make a remarkable comeback in 1993, winning the Tennis Masters series event in Canada – an achievement that earnt him the prestigious ATP’s ‘Comeback Player of the Year’ award.
Since retiring Pernfors is a regular competitor on the ATP Champions Tour and has established a company which sells baseball caps with fellow Champions Tour player Mats Wilander.
