Biography | Irish mezzo-soprano Paula Murrihy has appeared at Londons Royal Opera House, Teatro Comunale, Bologna, Santa Fe Opera, Los Angeles Opera, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Oper Frankfurt, Opera de Nice, Chicago Opera Theater, Wexford Festival Opera, Boston Lyric Opera and Opera Boston in a range of roles including the title role in Handels Ariodante, Annio/La Clemenza di Tito, 2nd Lady/Die Zauberflöte, Dido/Dido and Aeneas, Baba/The Rakes Progress, Octavian/Der Rosenkavalier, Emilia/Otello, Dorabella/Cosi fan Tutte, Cherubino/Ghosts of Versailles, Tebaldo/Don Carlo, Hänsel/Hänsel und Gretel, Helene Une Education Manquee, Ino/Semele, Kreusa/Medea, Orontea/LOrontea, Medoro/Orlando Furioso, Lazuli/Letoile, Lucy Perez/Hotel Casablanca, Nancy/Albert Herring, Scipio in Glanerts Caligula, Ascanio/Benvenuto Cellini (new production by Terry Gilliam), and Suzy/La Rondine.
Orchestrally, Ms. Murrihy was the soloist in the world premiere of John Harbisons Symphony No. 6 with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and also performed in the world premiere of Osvaldo Golijovs opera Ainadamar at Tanglewood and with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. As a frequent soloist with the Handel & Haydn Society of Boston, she has sung Bachs St. John Passion, Handels Messiah, Mozarts Requiem, Rossinis Petite Messe Solenelle, Schuberts Mass in C and Vivaldis Gloria. She has also performed Bachs Christmas Oratorio with the RTÉ in Dublin, St. Matthew Passion with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Beethovens Symphony No. 9 with the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra, Messiah with Huddersfield Choral Society, Mendelssohns Elijah with Utah Symphony, Haydns Harmoniemesse with Gabrieli Consort, Paukenmesse as part of the Tanglewood season and the St. Matthew Passion, both for Boston Symphony Orchestra. With the Nederlandse Programma Stichting, she has appeared in Handels Alexanders Feast and Solomon, as well as Honnegers Judith.
Murrihys 15/16 season appearances include multiple productions with Oper Frankfurt including the title role in a new production of Carmen, Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier, Polissena in Handels Radamisto, and Hansel in Humperdincks Hansel and Gretel. Other appearances include Der Rosenkavalier with both Dutch National Opera and Oper Stuttgart. Murrihy also performs Handels Messiah with Orchestre de Chambre de Paris and is featured in a recital with Ensemble Matheus.
An accomplished recitalist, Ms. Murrihy was invited to participate in the Marilyn Horne Foundation Masterclass Series at Carnegie Hall, New York, and has performed at the Aldeburgh Festival, UK, New York Festival of Song, Wexford Festival, as well as with the Irish Chamber Orchestra in the Shannon International Music Festival.
Murrihy has been a Young Artist with the Britten-Pears program, in addition to Santa Fe Opera, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Utah Opera, Merola /San Francisco Opera Center, William Walton Foundation, and Tanglewood Music Center. She holds a Master in Vocal Performance from the New England Conservatory, where she was the recipient of the prestigious John Moriarty Presidential Scholarship and Presser Award. She received her Bachelor in Music from the DIT Conservatory of Music & Drama, Dublin, Ireland. |
