Biography | English bass Graeme Broadbent made his Royal Opera debut in 1997 as First Soldier (Salome) and has since returned to sing nearly forty roles for The Royal Opera, including Colline (La bohème), Timur (Turandot), King Marke and Steersman (Tristan und Isolde), Angelotti and Sciarrone (Tosca), Doctor Grenvil (La traviata), King of Egypt (Aida) and Nightwatchman (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg). At the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, Shakespeares Globe, he has sung Ariadenus (LOrmindo) and Pluto/Satiro (Rossis Orpheus) for The Royal Opera.
Broadbent was born in Halifax and studied at the Royal College of Music with Lyndon Vanderpump and at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory with Yevgeny Nesterenko. He sings for all the UKs leading opera companies, engagements including the Commendatore (Don Giovanni), Hans Foltz (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg) and Doctor Grenvil (La traviata) for Glyndebourne Festival, Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte) for Glyndebourne on Tour, Don Basilio (The Barber of Seville) and Doctor (Punch and Judy) for English National Opera, Trulove (The Rakes Progress) and Don Basilio for Scottish Opera, Ringmaster (Pinocchio) for Opera North and Sparafucile (Rigoletto), Marquis of Calatrava (La forza del destino), Prince Gremin (Eugene Onegin) and Sulpice (La Fille du régiment) for Opera Holland Park. He sang Hotel Manager in David Aldens production of Powder Her Face for the Almeida Theatre and Aldeburgh Festival, broadcast on Channel 4 in 1999 and released on DVD in 2005.
International appearances include Falstaff at the Baden-Baden Festival, Don Giovanni and Padre Guardiano (La forza del destino) for Teatro Carlo Felice and roles in Paris, Vienna, Stuttgart and New York. He sings widely in concert and recital, including appearances at the Wigmore Hall, the Royal Festival Hall and the BBC Proms. Broadbent teaches at the RCM. |
