BiographyThe LTA was established as the Metropolitan Board Teachers' Association in 1872 to represent teachers working for the London School Board. In 1903 it started admitting teachers of all grades working for London County Council and changed its name to the London Teachers' Association. It always co-operated very closely with the NUT and in January 1922 merged with the National Union, although retaining its name and a large degree of autonomy. Teachers working for the LCC could not join either the NUT or the LTA without also joining the other organisation.
