NameHudson; John (fl 2012); English tenor
Datesfl 2012
GenderMale
BiographyJohn studied at London’s Guildhall before spending a year with the chorus of the Welsh National Opera, (WNO) whereupon he was given a contract as a Principal with the English National Opera,(ENO) sparking recognition with his debut from respected critics such as the Independent’s Michael White, “The heartening thing about the cast is the debut of John Hudson, a tenor who sings Macduff with such conspicuous distinction that it becomes a major role. ENO has needed a capacious lyric/spinto tenor with a sense of theatre for a long while. Here at last he is”.

Since then he has had many roles for the ENO amongst them, Rodolpho (La Boheme), Nadir (The Pearl Fishers), Alfredo, (in Jonathan Miller’s production of La Traviata) and the Duke Rigoletto). For the WNO he has sung Alfredo and Don Jose and took part in Prince Charles’s 50th birthday celebrations at Buckingham Palace.

He has also sung for the Scottish Opera, spent three months in New Zealand with the Auckland Opera where he sang Alfredo and performed the title roles in Ernani and I Due Foscari for the Nationale Reisopera, Holland. Concert performances abroad include Ottawa, Paris, Florence, Frankfurt and Dublin; and in Great Britain venues including the Barbican Theatre in London and Birmingham’s Symphony Hall. John has also appeared on various BBC 3 recordings and was a guest on BBC2’s ‘Viva La Diva!’ with Lesley Garrett, also featuring on her CD, Lesley Garrett.

Recent London bookings have been Cavaradossi (Tosca) at the Royal Albert Hall and the title role in Andrea Chenier at Opera Holland Park. Future plans include a return to ENO for Radames (Aida) and Don Jose at RAH.
