Biography | Johnny Butterworth was a British former lightweight boxer. The lightweight fought across the UK, France, Australia and California in a nine-year career, and was a former Central Area Champion.
He became the first amateur boxer from Rochdale to win a Northern Counties title, and in 1950 he won a National Boys Clubs title fighting out of Hamer Boxing Club. He entered the paid ranks in 1951, had a short but successful spell in the States, became Central Area champion and also defeated the Welsh and Scottish champions in a 55 fight career. In 1955 he beat British title holder Joe Lucy in a non-title contest. The same year he also signed for Rochdale Amateur Football Club.
