| Biography | The Danish baritone Morten Frank Larsen studied at the Royal Academy of Music Aarhus and attended master classes with Josef Greindl and Gino Bechi. At the Aarhus Summer Opera he gave his debut as Tarquinius (The rape of Lucretia).
In 1997 he went to Braunschweig for three years and since 2000 he has been in Vienna, where he regularly performs at both Volksoper and Staatsoper.
He is frequently heard at the Royal Opera Copenhagen, where he a.o. has performed Conte di Luna (Il Trovatore) and the title role in Don Giovanni or in Aarhus as Pelléas (Pelléas et Mélisande). In Sevilla and Bologna he sang in 1999 and in 2002 Heerrufer (Lohengrin), in Salzburg Conte Almaviva (Le Nozze di Figaro) and in Palermo Jochanaan (Salome) in 2005.
His repertoire contains over 40 roles, among which are Figaro (Barbiere), Belcore (LElisir damore), Riccardo (I Puritani), Malatesta (Don Pasquale), Posa (Don Carlo), Germont (La Traviata), Eugene Onegin, Wolfram (Tannhäuser), Marcello (La Bohème), Sharpless (Madame Butterfly), Eisenstein (Die Fledermaus), Danilo (Die lustige Witwe), Zar Peter (Zar und Zimmermann) and Nick Shadow (The Rakes Progress).
In 2007 he sang the title role of Don Giovanni in Copenhagen, Il Barbiere di Sivgila with the Niederöster-reichisches Tonkünstler-Orchester at the Vienna Musikverein and in St. Pölten as well as Mandryka (Arabella) at Deutsche Oper, Berlin. Furthermore he had his debut in Zürich as Mandryka (on DVD).
His relationship with Deutsche Oper Berlin has lasted since 2005 and includes Sophies Choice by N. Maw, Braunfelss Jeanne dArc, Ägyptische Helena plus performances as Mandryka, Jochanaan and Scarpia (Tosca).
He performed in Tokyo in 2010 in Pelléas et Mélisande and had his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 2011 as Count (Capriccio) with Renée Fleming. In 2011 he also sang Mandryka in Palermo.
Mr. Larsens future engagements include further roles at Vienna Staatsoper, Volksoper and The Danish National Opera as Kurwenal (Tristan und Isolde) and Count Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro) among others.
His repertoire as a concert singer includes Mahlers 8th symphony, Mendelssohns Walpurgisnacht, Mozarts and Faurés Requiem, Szymanowskis Stabat mater, Brahms Ein deutsches Requiem, Orffs Carmina Burana.
Mr. Larsen has worked with conductors such as Leif Segerstam, Daniele Gatti, Manfred Honek, Marc Piollet, Alexander Rahbari, Michael Schønwandt, Marc Soustrot, Marcello Viotti, Kent Nagano and Lothar Zagrosek.
He has received a.o. the most prestigious Danish Award for singers, the Aksel Schiøtz Award, and in 2003 the Eberhard-Wächter-Medaille of the Vienna Staatsoper. |
