Performance Notes | The People's Awards honoured outstanding achievement and individuals across Britain. The public nominated people they wanted to be honoured.
The overall winner in the People's Awards 2000 was pioneering heart surgeon Sir Magdi Yacoub, who received the award ahead of Sir Richard Branson and Sir Paul McCartney, who had also been nominated. The courage award went to David Robertson and the crew of the Mizpah from Shetland, who January of 2000 went to the rescue of a fishing trawler when it caught fire in treacherous seas off Orkney. Billy Connolly was honoured in the arts field, while singer Elton John was the winner in the music category. Actor David Jason received an award for his work in television and Dame Judi Dench was honoured for her contribution to film.
The award for contribution to sport went to Lindsay Lang, from Paisley in Scotland, for setting up a basketball association which played a large part in keeping children in the area away from drugs and crime. Damion Hillman, 15, from North Shields, won the children's award for rescuing a drowning boy from the North Sea. The innovation award went to Helen Gill and Ross Munday, from the Royal Hospital For Neurodisability in London, for their pioneering work in developing a communication system for those with severe brain damage.
