Performance Notes | At this event Barbara Castle became the first woman to address an IOD convention.
Ronald Regan, Governor of California at the time, received a standing ovation after delivering his speech, an honour only accorded once before when Sir Alec Douglas-Home addressed the conference in 1962. He attended with his wife, Nancy Reagan, who was seated with Mrs Annenberg, wife of the American Ambassador.
"Attacks on the Government's handling of the economy, their increasing intervention in the affairs of business and industry, and the effects of strikes on Britain's trading performance, were made at the Institute of Director's Annual conference held in the Royal Albert Hall, London, yesterday. Six prominent industrialists and politicians - including Governor Ronald Reagan of California - countered Government arguments put by Barbara Castle, Secretary of State for Employment and Productivity, in the first address to the annual conference by a woman."
