Performance Notes | A fashion show augmenting the 'Britain Can Make It' Exhibition. 150 models showcased day and draped and embroidered evening dresses, with nylon net making its first appearance in a romantic picture gown. The dresses were from 22 London fashion houses.
"At midnight last night the floor of the Albert Hall was cleared of dancers and the biggest parade of fashion ever staged in this country began. One hundred and fifty mannequins from 22 fashion houses filed slowly under gigantic arc lamps at the rate of six a minute on to the centre of the floor. Each girl was wearing the very latest gowns from British designers; it was the largest show of its kind and demonstrated beyond any doubt the superiority of British design and material. The show was part of the hall organized by the British Creative Designers in aid of the industry's principal charities, and it was the first time that such a scene has been televised from the Albert Hall. The Albert Hall had been converted into one huge studio inside the hall earlier in the evening a pre-view of the fashion parade was broadcast to the world. Celebrities on the floor were interviewed by Leslie Mitchell, and Geraldo and his orchestra played while television cameras ranged the whole scene." (The Times, 3 October 1946)
The event was the first ever television broadcast from the Hall. It was shown on the BBC at 21:00. The event was also broadcast on BBC Radio.
British Pathe has footage of the event (Film ID:1412.07, Duration 00:01:17:00).
