Performance NotesThe fifth Smirnoff Fashion Awards, which were the largest competition of its type in the UK giving students a chance to produce the most outragsous outfits for judging by some of the biggest names in fashion. The 1988 competition attracted 2,746 entries which were wittled down to 60 by the judges for showing on the catwalk at this event. This year also saw young designers in Europe given a chance to compete.

The event was filmed by Thames Television for an hour long programme broadcast at 22:35 on 7 March 1988 called 'Fashion '88 - featuring the Smirnoff UK Fashion Awards'.

The design brief given to UK and European fashion students was to design an outfit for any of the four different categories: Urban (City Wear for rebels and rogues); Active (Colourful Couture for sports-mas spectators); Ethnic (England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales - True Brits take to the hills); Evening (Satorial Splendour for after-dark activities). Each of the sixty students chosen to show creations at the event wer egiven £120 to make u their designs. Four winners were chosen from across the categories, of which three recieved £1,000 and one - the overall winner - won £2,000. Each winner also won a Smirnoff statuette.
