Performance NotesThe Royal Naval War Libraries (RNWL) was set up to supply books and magazines to smaller war ships that do not carry their own Service Libraries and to RN Shore Establishments. All members of the British marine defence forces, both retired and serving, were able to avail of the services offered by the RNWL. Many of its books came from donations and funding was through the Royal Naval War Amenities Fund. The RNWL also sold paperback fiction books and gramophone records at wholesale prices to ships, messes and shore establishments libraries. When the war ended in Europe early 1945, the RNWL was wound down and its huge collection of non-fiction books was retained and these formed the nucleus of the Royal Naval Loan Library (1946-1947).
