Orchestra or Band | Stan Kenton and his Orchestra |
Performance Notes | ""US BAND ENDS 20-YEAR BAN. A ban that has prevented American jazz musicians from playing in this country for over 20 years ended yesterday with the appearance in London of Stan Kenton and his orchestra at the start of a 33-day tour. The orchestra played to 11,000 people at the Royal Albert Hall in the afternoon and at the Gaumont State Theatre, Kilburn, last night. The Ministry of Labour stopped Americans playing in 1935, after British musicians were not allowed to work in the United States. Now, working on an exchange basis with Kenton. Ted Heath and his Music will start touring the United States later this month. If the exchange is successful, others may follow." (The Daily Telegraph, 12 March 1956) |
