Performance Notes | 'Tina Turner is awarded Lifetime Achievement Award: Given everything she overcame in her personal life, and all that she achieved in her professional career, this award was a no-brainer. In her acceptance speech she said of MOBO: "Black music has finally been recognised. I've been in the business since 1960 and to my knowledge black music has never been rewarded in this way." Ladysmith Black Mambazo perform: MOBO went back to the roots of black music by inviting the popular South African vocal group to showcase their unmistakable sound. Beverley Knight winning the Best Album award for 'Prodigal Sista', and in her speech she addresses the same sentiment that MOBO is built on: "Wow. I look around here and I am seeing a lot of United States visitors tonight, and it's wonderful to see you. I would like the UK record companies to notice and see that they could have the same calibre of artists if they would just believe in UK talent."' (MOBO website, January 2016)
The event was recorded by MOBO Productions, directed by Julia Knowles and broadcast on Channel 4 on 7 October 1999 at 22:30.
