| Performance Notes | During this performance the baritone Thomas Allen collapsed. A student, Patrick McCarthy, stepped in from the audience, offered his services as a professional singer who was experienced with the piece. Given that the understudy for the part a member of the choir was, in fact, a doctor and therefore looking after Allen, his offer was accepted. He borrowed a dinner jacket and tie and took to the stage. He received a standing ovation.
The event was filmed by BBC Television. |
