Performance Notes | A rally to mark the second anniversary of India's being proclaimed a republic within the Commonwealth.
""Mr Attlee, the principal speaker at the rally, said that the present was a testing time for civilisation and for democracy. he was old enough to recall the time when all in this country were quite happy and confident in human progress. We were not confident now. The whole civilization might commit suicide: they had seen nations with their democratic ideal fall away. There was a content of ideas and ideals in which we had to play our part. The Britisj Commonwealth of Nations was joined together in the most remarkable political experiment on record, all free people freely associating together." (The Times, 28 January 1952, page 2) |
