"MR BALDWIN'S STIRRING CALL TO YOUTH.
NEED OF LEADERSHIP IN FIGHT FOR FREEDOM.
"Europe at Armed Attention"
"For You to Protect Democracy"
EMPIRE'S VOICE RAISED AGAINST FALSE GODS OF WAR.
Mr Baldwin delivered a stirring call to youth when he addressed 8,000 young people, all aged between 16 and 19 and representing every nation in the British Commonwealth, at the Albert Hall last night.
He described the speech as the last he would deiver before a great audience as Prime Minister.
"You," he declared, "are the governors of the future. It will be for you to protect democracy, from without and from within."
A great tumult of cheering interrupted the speech when Mr Baldwin said
"Europe to-day is neither at war nor at peace, but stands at armed attention. Peace in some quarters is proclaimed as a bad dream and war glorified as an ideal for rational men. As long as the British Empire lasts we will raise our voices against these false gods."
The Duke of Gloucester surprised and delighted the audience by paying an unexpected visit to the Hall, reading a message of good wished from the King and Queen and making a short speech..."
